Iron Eagle Racing fields two teams at this yearʼs Oktoberfest
Sparta, WI, October 10, 2011 -- The 2011 ASA Midwest Tour season came to a close on Sunday at Oktoberfest at the LaCrosse Speedway in West Salem, WI. Tim Schendel and the Iron Eagle Racing team, including the #89 Malco Ford development driver Matt Tifft, participated every day during the four day event. The team was dealt with its share of ups and downs.
It was a long weekend of racing that began on Thursday night. Teammate Matt Tifft ran the #89 Malco Ford in the Futures race and finished fifth. Prior to this race, Schendel and Tifftʼs pit crew member, Brian Westley, was involved in an accident at the track and was taken to the hospital to severe injuries to his leg.
“The accident shook up everyone on the team that night.” Schendel said. “We were working hard all week and then to go into this weekend and have something like happen was extremely hard. After that, it seemed bad luck followed us. Between Matt and I, we had three flat tires and two power steering lines that broke. It was not the way we wanted the weekend to play out.”
Schendel and Tifft ran the Dick Trickle 99 on Friday night. Broken down into three segments of 33 laps each, Schendel placed 3rd in the first segment and 2nd is the second segment. This put him in the lead coming into the third segment. He was going strong until a flat tire caused him to settle for an 8th place finish taking him out of contention to win. Neil Knoblock came away the victor.
On Saturday, the super late models qualified for Sundayʼs feature event. Schendel was the third car out for qualifying runs. He landed the thirteenth spot out of a field of 71 cars that were entered. Teammate Matt Tifft qualified 8th.
Sundayʼs feature began with the field being inverted nine spots. Johnny Sauter and Tifft took the front row. Schendel kept his thirteenth starting spot and would finish the race in the same place. Tiff went out around a lap 15 caution with a flat tire. He was able to come back out but never quite gained the momentum back. He finished 21st.

Johnny Sauter took the win followed by Travis Sauter and Chris Weinkauf.
“We just didnʼt have what it took for Oktoberfest.” Schendel said. “I wouldʼve liked to have been there at the end but it just didnʼt happen. I want to thank my sponsors, crew and family for all of their support this year.”
Schendel went into this weekend sitting in fourth place in overall series points. He ended the weekend in the same place. Andrew Morrissey earned the ASA Midwest Tour championship, Jacob Goede took second and Nathan Haseleu was the third place finisher.
Next up for Schendel is the ASA Midwest Tour Championship Banquet.
