Sparta, WI, October 3, 2011 -- Tim Schendel and the Iron Eagle Racing team was in Rockford, IL this past weekend for the ASA Midwest Tourʼs debut at Rockford Speedway at the 46th Annual National Short Track Championships. The ASA Midwest Tour headlined Sundayʼs main event. Schendel brought home a tenth place finish.
The team participated in open practice at the track on Friday. The #21 TexPar Energy Chevrolet was in the top ten in both practice sessions that day.
Qualifying took place on Saturday. Schendel was the first qualifier out and was able to hold a seventh place qualifying finish. Chris Wimmer was top qualifier. After a mandatory invert based on a roll of the die, Schendel started the race in the seventh position after winning his heat.
“Qualifying and racing was very competitive this weekend.” Schendel said. “Thereʼs not a lot of passing you can do at Rockford and once you get mired in the crowd, youʼre kind of stuck. I was glad we finished with the car intact. Now, Iʼm really looking forward to Oktoberfest.”
Steve Carlson won the race. It was the eighth short track championship he had won tying national short track champion, the late Joe Shear, for the record. Jacob Goede and Nick Panitzke rounded out the top three.
Schendel maintained his fourth place overall standing in the series after this weekend with only twenty three points that separate him from third. Andrew Morrissey sits in the top position followed by Nathan Haseleu and Jacob Goede.
Up next for Schendel and the rest of the ASA Midwest Tour drivers is the ASA Midwest Tour championship weekend at Oktoberfest in West Salem, WI at LaCrosse Speedway. Dubbed Schendelʼs “home track”, he was won this race twice in his career and taken home two Sportsmanship Awards. “Oktoberfest is a blast and the one race I really look forward to each year.”
Schendel said of the upcoming race. “The past couple of years, we were hampered with mechanical problems and didnʼt finish so great. Iʼm hoping this year, weʼll have a strong qualifying run and a good finish. I usually have a lot of family, friends and sponsors come out to this race and to have a good finish at my home track would be a great way to end the year.”
Tim will be fielding the #21 TexPar Energy Chevrolet in the Dick Trickle 99 on Friday. Qualifying for the ASA Midwest Tour will be held on Saturday with the championship race taking place on Sunday. For the complete Oktoberfest schedule, please visit www.oktoberfestraceweekend.com.
